Shortly after our Taiwan holiday we went for another family trip. This time however to an already familiar place: Ubud, Bali.
We spent a few relaxing days with my sister-in-law and her partner in a beautiful villa situated in a lush green environment, only a few minutes from the centre, from where we went to explore the whereabouts of the Monkey Forest, the rice paddies as well as the temples at Gunung Kawi and Tirta Empul.

Bali, revisited! /bali-revisited/ /bali-revisited/#respond Mon, 05 May 2014 15:16:04 +0000 /?p=1267 ]]> In March 2014, just two years after my first visit, we went back to Bali for a long weekend. I am not that much into beach holidays and will get bored after a couple of hours relaxing in an armchair (or “doing nothing” as I would call it).

Therefore, we headed to Ubud, a beautiful small town, with lots of artistic flair. An excellent spot to wind down and while away some time in one of the cafes or shopping for local products. I was positively surprised to see that the place had not changed much and that it is, albeit not impossible, still rare to see the ubiquitous global brands.

And there is much more… within short distance you can find temples and similar cultural highlights amid amazing nature (rainforest at its best; beautiful, (sometimes) hidden gorges and lots and lots of rice paddies). This all makes for a spectacular backdrop to day trips or to a bicycle tour and invites you to stop once in a while to take pictures (or catch your breath :-)).

Sunrise at Mount Bromo /sunrise-at-mount-bromo/ /sunrise-at-mount-bromo/#respond Thu, 10 Apr 2014 02:48:28 +0000 /?p=1118 ]]> Sometimes it is good to leave the city life behind and indulge in some nature and outdoor activities. That’s why in August 2012, I spent a weekend with friends in East Java. On our program was a volcano (yes, again… there are so many!), Mount Bromo. It is beautifully situated in the middle of a vast plain called “Sea of Sand” and is part of a National Park. Waking up at 3.15am on Saturday in order to be in position for the stunning sunrise is definitely worth it. And combined with a relaxing Sunday, it makes a picture perfect weekend escape.

Team Building Trek /team-building-trek/ /team-building-trek/#respond Tue, 08 Apr 2014 04:38:07 +0000 /?p=1093 ]]> The Easter weekend 2012 was all about team building. I left with my working colleagues for a 2 day trip to Indonesia. Our goal was to reach the summit of Mount Gede, a volcano not far from Jakarta. We started hiking up through dense forest for several hours until we reached our camp site for our overnight stay. (Actually, overnight is not really accurate. Is there a better word for a few hours sleep from around 9pm to midnight?)

In the early hours of the second day we then attacked the last (and steeper) part until we reached the crater rim at around 4am. At 3’000m altitude and exposed to the wind, it was very chilly and the time until sunrise felt very long. The stunning view that came with the gorgeous sunrise made me however quickly forget anything else. It was so exciting to gradually be able to see the surroundings!

Beautiful Bali /beautiful-bali/ /beautiful-bali/#respond Sun, 06 Apr 2014 02:03:36 +0000 /?p=1077 ]]> Bali is beautiful and the pace in Bali is slow. Both is great and caters to wonderful stimulating but relaxing holidays! In February 2012, after 6 months living and working in Singapore, Bali was our first and, I think, well-deserved holiday trip.

The island’s population is mostly Hindu and there are thousands of temples (some very prominent, some hidden treasures, but all stunning and a pleasure to visit and photograph!). I liked best to visit whatever attraction in the early light of the day – before the tourist buses arrive and the temperature gets too hot – and to combine this with a lazy afternoon…

Christmas 2011 at the beach /christmas-2011-at-the-beach/ /christmas-2011-at-the-beach/#respond Sun, 06 Apr 2014 01:55:00 +0000 /?p=1072 ]]> 2011, my first Christmas away from family! We chose to leave Singapore for a few days and to go to Bintan. This place is neither exotic (too many Singaporeans) nor adventurous (resorts all over the north coast), but definitely conveniently close (45min ferry ride from Singapore) and very relaxing.

It made an excellent choice and with the choir singers during dinner, the nice decoration and the attentive staff, we didn’t quite feel like Christmas at home, but still like Christmas…
